Slavery Era Insurance Policy Orders


In 2009, the Maryland General Assembly passed Senate Bill 751 requiring all insurers authorized to do business in the State to provide the Maryland Insurance Commissioner with a report of each slaveholder insurance policy issued in the State by the insurer, or any predecessor of the insurer, prior to 1865, and a copy of each document relating to the information. A slaveholder insurance policy was one that was issued to insure the slaveholder against injury to, or death of, a slave. 

This one-time report was due by Oct. 1, 2011. Those insurers who did not submit a report were subject to appropriate enforcement action. Administrative orders issued as a result can be found following the links below:
