Service of Process Procedures

In accordance with Section 4-107 of the Insurance Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland, each insurer authorized to write insurance in the State of Maryland, as a condition of doing business in this State, must appoint the Insurance Commissioner as attorney for service of process issued against an insurer in the State.

If you are serving a summons, subpoena, or garnishment against a licensed insurance company in the State of Maryland, you must serve the Insurance Commissioner as Resident Agent for the Acceptance of Service of Process.

Two copies of the documents should be delivered to:

Maryland Insurance Administration
200 St. Paul Place, Suite 2700
Baltimore, MD 21202

along with a check for $15 made payable to the Maryland Insurance Administration.

If you are serving the Maryland Automobile Insurance Fund, you must serve your papers directly with that insurance company.

If you have questions regarding papers already filed with this office, please send an email with:

  • your name;
  • your phone number;
  • the name of the insurance company to whom you are serving papers; and
  • the plaintiff's name.

Address the email to:
