Know What Your Insurance Covers Before Severe Storms Strike

Prepare an Inventory of Your Home

With National Weather Service forecasters predicting the potential for severe weather the next two days in Maryland, including thunderstorms, damaging winds, large hail, tornadoes and flash flooding, the Maryland Insurance Administration urges residents to prepare now.

Before severe weather strikes you should:

  • Prepare an inventory of your home. Whenever possible, take photos or videos of your personal property to support any claim you may need to file later. Smart-phone users can download a free home inventory application, myHOME Scr.APP.book, from the Insurance Administration’s website.Free Home Inventory Application
  • Keep this inventory, as well as a copy of your insurance policy and the contact information for your insurance company or agent in a safe place such as a safe deposit box, a fire and waterproof safe; or scan it and save it on a flash drive.
  • Know how to shut off the gas, electricity and water, and how to board-up vulnerable places around the house, such as windows and doors.

Homeowners and renters alike should know prior to the arrival of any storm which kinds of damage are covered by your policy and what is not. Your insurance agent can help to explain and the Maryland Insurance Administration offers guides and general information about insurance coverage on the Homeowners and Renters Insurance tab or visit us on www.Facebook.com/MdInsuranceAdmin
