Notice of Public Meeting

The Senate Finance Committee submitted a letter to Commissioner Al Redmer, Jr. asking the Maryland Insurance Administration to convene a meeting with interested groups and stakeholders to discuss how to address the issue of fraud. In accordance with this request, we will convene a meeting of interested parties to discuss possible solutions to deterring fraud in uninsured motorist claims from a “phantom” vehicle or a staged “hit and run.” Additional discussion will focus on fraud committed at initial application in which an applicant misrepresents the garaging location of a vehicle or residency of the applicant. As fraud causes unnecessary costs that are passed on to policyholders, we look forward to hearing from the industry, the defense bar, other organizations knowledgeable about insurance fraud, and the public on ways to develop possible solutions to combat fraud.
